Marcel Duchamp

Marcel Duchamp, Fountain, 1917
Art can be anything.  Kit White says, "Art is not defined by medium or the means of its production, but by a collective sense that it belongs to a category of experience we have come to know as art."  Look at Duchamp's Fountain, it is a urinal placed upside down, with the words R. Mutt, dated 1917.  The question rises, is this art or not?  Dialogue about art is essential and that is what this piece brings.  Enjoy!

  1. This is a very thought provoking post... I've never really thought about the definition of art, but have always had a sense of what I think is art or not - and a sense that even if I don't like it, it's still art. I've often thought certain dishes I've cooked or baked are art, when probably no one else would. I know this is crazy, but I always think rice and beans (from scratch) is art. I think that b/c it's a beautiful and lengthy process... one that women have been nourishing their families w/ - around the world - for umpteen billion years (give or take). I don't mean this weird or new age-y sounding, but making it makes me feel connected, somehow. Same w/ bread, really. Anyhow. I'm babbling on your post, so I'll stop. :-)

  2. I would agree with you. The culinary arts, are certainly an art form. Just the process of making the food can be art, and the result is a body of work that is edible.
