"Tradition is the record of imaginative experience," said Kathleen Raine. "The tradition of making art is the record of exploration and "traditional" art is the product of exploration in a particular time and place," according to Kit White. Art can tell us where we have been, where we are and where we are going. It records the past, reports the present and foretells the future. Turner was a romantic landscape painter and was controversial during his time due to the way he depicted landscape that was different then what went before him.
